Hill House
2008

Type: house

Location: 1824 Logans Hollow   Austin, Texas

This project compiles all aspects of design learned through Sago’s experience in residential architecture. The sloping 1.9 acre site in an exclusive Westlake Hills subdivision sits atop a hill, exposing it to breathtaking views of the valley beyond. The Hill House is accessed by way of a long paved driveway that ascends with the existing topography, and winds around clusters of mature oaks. In addition to maximizing the views, the orientation and location within the site was chosen in an effort to avoid disturbing the existing trees. The trees vestibule the generous house from the street and its neighbors, virtually making it disappear. In terms of form, the house’s main concept was to rethink the ‘box’: to deconstruct it, digest it, and reconstruct it. By superimposing volumes of various proportions at various planes, movement was given to the facades. Cantilevers dominate the focal points, while free standing vertical planes cause pause in the composition. The interior three dimensional spaces are equally approached, with interplays of volumes that flow horizontally and vertically. The Hill House’s generous five thousand sq. ft. of interior spaces include all programmatic requirements one would expect in a project of this size– three car garage, kitchen, dining, living, exterior living spaces, master suite, media room, three bedrooms and baths, separate guest house, pool, etc. Needless to say, every element to go in this project will be of the highest quality. Massive floor to ceiling sliding glass panels will be the vehicles with which to literally integrate the interiors with the exteriors. Natural materials will dominate most surfaces. The spirit present within the lines of the Hill House humbly echoes (and perhaps was unconsciously influenced by) the work of great masters like Luis Barragan, Richard Neutra, and Oscar Niemeyer.
